HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Women's Tennis finished up the 2025 edition of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Fall Tournament on Saturday afternoon with Bethune-Cookman fielding two student-athletes in the annual event taking place at the Bulldog Tennis Courts on the campus of Alabama A&M in Huntsville, Alabama. The two-day event ran across Friday and Saturday, respectfully.
On Saturday, Bethune-Cookman's doubles team of
Jalayah Shaw and
Zahara El-Zein took on Jackson State's Victoria Linkovski and Helen Hernandez in the semifinals, after the B-CU duo was awarded a bye in the opening round.
The Wildcats tandem fell 8-5 in the only match played by the Maroon and Gold on the day.
"I thought Zahara [El-Zein] and Jalayah [Shaw] competed well in the tournament," admitted Head Coach
Chris Wollett.
In singles play, sophomore El-Zein fell in a three-set thriller to Sofia Sotelo Raya of Alabama A&M on scores of 6-4, 2-6, 0-6. The other singles match saw Shaw suffer a tough straight-set defeat at the hands of Alabama State's Cleanne Pickel 2-6, 4-6.
"Zahara's match was an absolute battle as her opponent had a very similar style of play," stated Wollett afterwards. "She did a great job of winning the first set, but it lasted over an hour, which really took a toll on her legs. In the third set, I think she just ran out of gas."
Due to court conditions at nearby Derbyshire Park and mixed with the weather in Central Florida, the Wildcats have been unable to practice as a team at their home facility since the beginning of the fall campaign.
"After Jalayah lost the first set, she did a great job of adjusting her strategy for the second set," expressed Wollett. "The 3-6 score does not reflect how close the games really were, in fact. I truly feel her tennis intellect is improving with each and every match she plays."
The final fall tournament of the 2025 calendar year takes place October 31 through November 3 in nearby DeLand, Florida for the Stetson Fall Tournament. This will be the second time B-CU is competing in an event hosted by Stetson, having participated in the Stetson Invite #1 just last weekend.
