Cats Turn in Seventh Place Finish in Montgomery

Robinson leads team in scoring in spring debut

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Bethune-Cookman's Katie Robinson finished tied for 15th overall Monday evening as the Wildcats took seventh place in the ASU Spring Classic hosted by Alabama State at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery, Alabama. The two-day event concluded with just 36 holes due to weather.

Katie Robinson, last year's Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Individual Champion, led the Wildcats with rounds of 83 and 78, finishing tied for 15th individually at 17-over-par 161.

B-CU junior Skylar Kew shot 81 and 87 to tie for 32nd at 168 (+24), while redshirt senior Kamary Leaf posted scores of 86 and 84 to finish tied for 35th at 170 (+26).

Meeya Marquez (87-92) tied for 47th at 179, and Leiahnni Smith (99-102) tied for 55th at 201 to round out the Wildcats' lineup.

"This was our first competition of the spring, and our first month has been continually interrupted by bad weather and various sicknesses throughout the team," expressed Head Coach Harry Stokes. "Our scores probably didn't reflect how we played."

Evansville captured the team title with a 36-hole total of 608 (+32), led by individual medalist Ekaterina Petrova, who shot 71 and 76 for a three-over-par total of 147. Host Alabama State finished second at 624, while Illinois-Chicago took third at 644 in the 12-team field.

"I think, mentally, the team is in the best place we've been in all year, and I think we just struggled with some of the golf this weekend," continued Stokes. "The good news is that the golf can be taken care of, and we've got a long few weeks of competition ahead of us.

"I think everyone is in really good spirits and really ready to take on the challenge. There's a lot to build on from this weekend, and I'm excited to see where we go from here."

Bethune-Cookman next competes in the Babs Steffens Invitational hosted by Stetson in DeBary, Florida, taking place February 24-25.
