Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Playing their second match in as many days, Bethune-Cookman Women's Tennis was tripped up by visiting St. John's (N.Y.) by a score of 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Derbyshire Park.

Header How it Happened

St. John's (7-3) opened the match sweeping all three doubles positions to claim the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. The duo of Alicia Gómez and Vicky Papadopoulou turned in a 6-0 win from Bethune-Cookman's Allexii Bassette and Jalayah Shaw in the No. 1 doubles position.

The Red Storm tandem of Sandra Dzhambazov and Nicoline Sartz-Lunde secured a compeittive 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles against B-CU's Zahara El-Zein and Lesa Snipes-Williams, while Giulia Bizzari and Charlotta Buss won by forfeit in the No. 3 slot.

"We fought hard against a quality team today," expressed B-CU Head Coach Chris Wollett. "The windy conditions added an extra element of difficulty, but that was hard to deal with by players on both sides of the net."

Bethune-Cookman (1-5) played well in singles play, once again, despite numerous players dealing with vexing injuries.

Papadopoulou, playing in the No. 1 position, faced the stiffest challenge of the day but prevailed 6-4, 6-1 over Jalayah Shaw in a tightly-contested match.

"Even though it was a team loss, we had a lot of positives to take from today," added Wollett. "No. 2 doubles was a battle to be proud of, and Jalayah's [Shaw] match at No. 1 singles was a lot closer than the score might indicate."

Noemi Babikova worked past Wildcats freshman El-Zein 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Charlotta Buss turned away Allexii Bassette 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot.

SJU's Gómez claimed a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 victory over Keona Burley on court No. 4. Dzhambazov grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 decision from B-CU's Lesa Snipes-Williams in the No. 5 slot.

Meanwhile, the singles match began as the No. 6 singles point was awarded to St. John's Giulia Bizzari by forfeit.

"I was proud of how everyone competed, but at the end of the day, St. John's is just a level above us right now," remarked Wollett.

Bethune-Cookman continues a three-match homestand Wednesday, March 5, when Edinboro (Pa.) visits Derbyshire Park at 11 a.m. Admission to all B-CU Women's Tennis home matches is free.
