Shaw strong in a halted match for Wildcats

MILLBROOK, Ala. – Jalayah Shaw took her opening set in singles play Friday morning despite Bethune-Cookman falling 4-0 to Jackson State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's Tennis matched housed at The Fields at 17 Springs in Millbrook, Alabama. The match was played as part of the SWAC Pod #2 event hosted by Alabama State.

Jackson State (9-8, 6-0) stayed unbeaten in SWAC play by opening the match collecting two-of-three positions in doubles play and grabbing the all-important doubles point early-on.

The Tigers fielded the duo of Isabela Benavides and Kayleigh Didderiens at the No. 2 position and secured a 6-1 victory over Zahara El-Zein and Keona Burley of Bethune-Cookman. JSU's Zofia Dziewiecka and Daniella Tovar completed the doubles triumph with a 6-0 win against the Wildcats tandem of Lesa Snipes-Williams and Anne Cerne on court three.

Bethune-Cookman (1-12, 0-5 SWAC) looked strong in singles play with Jalayah Shaw taking her opening set from JSU's Paula Corbalan in top flight action. However, the match would go unfinished for the sophomore from Plant City, Florida.

JSU would secure three singles wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 to clinch the match.

Dziewiecka led the charge in singles, delivering a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set win against Snipes-Williams in the No. 5 spot. Chiara Desia followed suit with an identical 6-0, 6-0 win over Cerne on court six to extend the lead at 3-0 in favor of the Tigers.

Didderiens clinched the match with a singles win at No. 3 by defeating Allexii Bassette 6-3, 6-0.

The Wildcats continue play at the SWAC Pod #2 event Saturday as they take on Mississippi Valley State at 3 p.m. Et (2 p.m. CT) on the campus of Alabama State in Montgomery, Alabama.
