BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Bethune-Cookman Women's Golf finished the opening round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship in third place after posting a team score of 335 (+47) on Monday morning at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Oxmoor Valley.
The Wildcats trail tournament leader Alabama State University, which shot a 317 (+29) to take command of the leaderboard after day one. Southern University holds second place with a 331 (+43), while Texas Southern (336, +48) and Prairie View A&M (343, +55) round out the five-team field.
Kamary Leaf, a senior from Brownsburg, Indiana, led the Wildcats' effort with an opening round 80 (+8), placing her fifth individually among the 24-player field. She sits just three strokes behind Alabama State's Yaiza Fernandez, who leads the individual competition after shooting a 77 (+5) through her first 18 holes on Monday.

Katie Robinson, the defending SWAC Individual Champion from a season ago in Mississippi, provided solid support with an 81 (+9), tying for sixth place overall, respectfully.
Skylar Kew, a junior from Dundas, Ontario, added an 85 (+13) to tie for 13th position, while sophomore
Meeya Marquez posted an 89 (+17) to finish the day in 21st place.
Leiahnni Smith completed the Wildcats' lineup with a 99 (+27), placing 24th in her first-ever SWAC Championship.
Defending champion ASU sits atop the leaderboard, claiming three of the top four individual positions.
B-CU will tee off on Day Two at 9:20 a.m. ET (8:20 a.m. CT) back at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Oxmoor Valley.
