Wildcats Pick Up First Win of the Season

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – B-CU women's tennis split a pair of contests over the weekend, defeating Edward Waters 6-1 for its first win of the season and falling to Florida 7-0.

The Wildcats (1-2) set the tone early by securing the doubles point. The tandem of Rosalida Asumwa and Maria Romero Vargas opened with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Zahara El-Zein and Jalayah Shaw followed with a 6-3 win at No. 2 to clinch the point.

In singles play, Bethune-Cookman continued its dominance, winning all five completed matches in straight sets or via match tiebreak. At the top spot, Shaw rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Aalisha Alexis 5-7, 6-4, 10-3 in a deciding super tiebreak. Romero Vargas secured a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 2, and El-Zein delivered a strong 6-2, 6-0 performance at No. 3.

Asumwa added a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4, and Taylor O'Neal capped the afternoon with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5.

Florida (5-2) secured the doubles point with a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles as the nationally ranked duo of Xinyi Nong and Nikola Daubnerova defeated Rosalida Asumwa and Maria Romero Vargas. The No. 2 match was left unfinished with the Gators leading 4-1.

In singles play, Florida showcased four nationally ranked players across the top five positions. At No. 1, No. 54 Valery Gynina defeated Jalayah Shaw 6-0, 6-1. Maria Romero Vargas fell to No. 23 Gabia Paskauskas 6-1, 6-2 at the second spot, while No. 80 Lucie Pawlak earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Zahara El-Zein at No. 3.

Nikola Daubnerova, ranked No. 92, topped Rosalida Asumwa 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4, and No. 97 Xinyi Nong closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Taylor O'Neal at No. 5.
