ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Bethune-Cookman track & field aims to build on its recent strong performances as it heads to the Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Classic at Lorry H. Dawkins Track. Hosted on the campus of former MEAC rival South Carolina State, the meet is set to begin Saturday at 9:15 a.m. EST.
B-CU turned in a strong all-around performance highlighted by two event victories and multiple podium finishes at the South Florida Invitational.
Michael Carter and Andrew Kiplagat led the way for the Wildcats, each claiming first-place finishes in their respective events. Carter won the men's long jump with a mark of 7.44 meters, while Amarrion Grant followed closely behind in second at 7.28 meters to give B-CU a 1-2 finish in the event.
Kiplagat added another victory on the track, taking the men's 5,000 meters in 14:33.07.
Bethune-Cookman also saw success in the hurdles and relay events. Donovan Walker-Collins placed second in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.93, while the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Ethan Sharpe, Jonathan Gaines, Walker-Collins, Shanard Walker and Jancent Wallace also secured a runner-up finish in 3:09.60.
In the field events, Nehemiah Armstrong (fourth, 52.15m) and Michael Walker (fifth, 50.83m) both placed in the top five in the men's javelin throw. Ashton Holland added a fourth-place finish in the men's discus (44.82m), while William Rothmiller placed sixth in the same event (44.07m).
On the women's side, Kasie Ugeh delivered a pair of strong performances, finishing third in the discus throw (45.26m) and sixth in the shot put (13.77m). Selena Rutland also recorded two top-six finishes, placing fifth in the triple jump (12.47m) and sixth in the high jump (1.60m).
Additional notable performances included Shanard Walker's eighth-place finish in the men's 100 meters (10.40), Jancent Wallace's eighth-place showing in the men's 400 meters (47.18), and Quiaundra Brown leading the women's sprinters with a 10th-place finish in the 100 meters (11.75).
This will be the third annual edition of the Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Classic, an event that aims to honor the legacy of a former South Carolina State track star who tragically passed away in a mass shooting in 2015.
The Lorry H. Dawkins Track is newly NCAA and IAAF certified, featuring an eight-lane track with 42-inch lanes on both the oval and straightaway. Inside the track are two long and triple jump runways with pits at both ends, along with areas for pole vault, high jump and javelin. The discus and hammer throw areas are located just outside the oval in an adjacent field.
The meet opens Saturday with the men's javelin throw and 5000 m at 9:15 and concludes with the men's 4 x 400m. Admission is $5 for those who wish to attend.
