Softball Stopped in Doubleheader Sweep to Florida Gulf Coast

Daytona Beach, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast was powerful and strong in every way on Wednesday as the visiting Eagles took both games of a softball doubleheader over Bethune-Cookman University, 15-3 & 23-1 at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Bethune-Cookman (4-19) got positive production from freshman outfielder Ashton Hinds in the opening game as she was 2-for-3 with a run driven in. Also playing well was senior shortstop Holly Bussey with a 1-for-3 game at the plate and a RBI.

FGCU (23-6) scored runs in the final four innings to end the game in the fifth inning on a run-rule. The Eagles scored five runs (two earned) on freshman pitcher Taryn Hernandez for B-CU to leave her as the pitcher of record with the loss. Hernandez lowered her mark to 1-4 on the year. Classmate Chastity Sanders was hit for 10 runs (two earned) by the Eagles in relief action.

FGCU was led in the first game by a trip of Eagles with a homerun each. Designated player Desiree Miller, Samantha Waldron and Roz Tyre each collected a homer in the game. B-CU senior Bussey went deep for the `Cats as well.

The win went to Rachael Edinger for FGCU. FGCU collected the win, 15-3.

In the second game, the Eagles started off early with 14 unanswered runs to start the game.

Miller hit two homers in the contest to lift her team in the 23-1 win. Carmen Paez was 3-for-3 at the dish, and teammate Jessica Carter came off the bench to collect a 3-for-3 outing as well.

B-CU got their lone run of the contest in the third inning when Bussey plated Tameika Jonas on a sacrifice fly.

The scoring for the Eagles was not quite over, however, as they stretched their lead with a nine-run fourth frame to give the final score of 23-1.

Senior first baseman Brandi Holley was 2-of-3 at the dish for the `Cats, while classmate Christina Trimble was 2-for-3 as well. The loss went to Allison Garcia to drop her record to 3-11 on the campaign. The win went to FGCU's Dana Frantz.
