Morgan State senior forward Marquise Kately scored all 13 of his points in the second half to key the Bears second half push to beat B-CU 55-44 Monday night. The MEAC leaders are now 16-10, 10-2, MEAC and B-CU is 12-14, 6-6, MEAC with the Wildcats wrapping a tough four-game road stretch the past two weekends.
B-CU Coach Reed was happy with his teams' play, but not finishing, not winning again is tough. "The effort was good, the game plan was good but we didn't make our free throws, didn't rebound as we need to and our lack of senior leadership and playing a lot of freshman and sophomores hurt us," said Reed. "Morgan State is really good. In watching them play, they've beat DePaul, Marshall, and Maryland - they are very talented. You have to keep them out of transition, limit their possessions and really for us we need to play a perfect game to beat them."
C. J. Reed led B-CU's offense Monday night scoring 14 points and 4 assists. John Holmes was inserted back into the starting lineup and scored 13 points, 4 rebounds (Holmes had been the top scoring MEAC sixth man this year playing about 25 minutes/per game). He played 34 minutes vs. MSU.
First Half Summary: Teams Deadlocked at 19-19
For the first 11 minutes of the first half, B-CU held the league-leading Bears to seven points, the Wildcats ahead 13-7 (9:37 to play) with Tobias Mahone hitting a corner three-pointer.
B-CU's largest lead in the opening 20 minutes was a nine point margin (16-7 with 6:45 to play) on a Jerry Jones layup. The Bears battled back with a 7-0 run over the next four minutes to get within two points at 16-14 with 2:46 left in the half.
MSU's Reggie Holmes hit a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to end the first 20 minutes - tying the game at 19. Holmes led Morgan State with eight first half points.
C. J. Reed and Tyrel Adams both scored four points to lead the Wildcats' offense in the first half.
