UNF Beats B-CU 3-2 To Snap Wildcat Winning Streaks

The University of North Florida (12-11) had only four hits but the big one was a three-run homer by TJ Thompson in the fourth inning, lifting the the Ospreys to a 3-2 win over Bethune-Cookman Wednesday night at Jackie Robinson. The B-CU loss snapped two streaks: the 'Cats nine game overall winning streak and the 8-0 home record in 2010.

UNF starter LHP John Atteo (2-1) pitched seven solid innings and closer Casey Medlen pitched the eighth and ninth innings for the save and limiting B-CU to seven hits in the game.

B-CU starter RHP Joseph Munoz (3.1 innings) and RHP Chris Anselmo (one inning). Munoz was very effective striking out three and not allowing a hit in 3+ innings for his best outing of the season.

"I thought we did a good job on our pitching. With only 3 runs allowed in a college baseball game you will win more often than not, so I was very proud of our guys (pitchers).  We continue to do a very good job on the mound and that's a good sign for this team," said Coach Mervyl Melendez.

"He (Gabriel Hernandez) made a mistake there with one pitch, one bad pitch for the home run. I guess that was good enough, just one pitch and they scored three runs and that's all they needed tonight. Joey Munoz and Chris Anselmo both pitched well and they did a  good job, " said Melendez.

WILDCATS LIMITED TO SEVEN HITS BY TWO UNF PITCHERS

"Today it just came down to not executing what we have done best, which is having good at bats, and making the adjustments," said Head Coach Mervyl Melendez. "We absolutely made no adjustments offensively today. The pitcher did a good job keeping us off balance but I didn't think it was that difficult for us to make adjustments especially when a guy who doesn't throw as hard."

"I thought we sat back on our heels. We didn't have intensity and that is why we lost this ball game. He  (UNF starting pitcher) was throwing strikes and we were actually not doing a good job putting the ball in play and getting the barrel of the bat on the baseball."

The Wildcats offense was led by C.J. Lauriello 2-3,  and Juan Perez 2-4 (1 RBI) and an RBI ground out from Peter O'Brien.  UNF pitchers struck out 7 B-CU batters.

Bethune-Cookman (13-10) hosts Dartmouth College Thursday (6 p.m.), Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (12 noon) at Jackie Robinson Ballpark continuing the four-game homestand.
