VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Bethune-Cookman softball received its first conference accolades of the 2010 season, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) officials announced Tuesday. In the second week of honors, Wildcat catcher Sabrina Ferguson was recognized as MEAC Player of the Week, while freshman shortstop Aurelia Gamch received Rookie of the Week recognition.
The Bethune-Cookman sophomore catcher, Sabrina Ferguson, earned a hit in every game against Cornell and Alabama State, while averaging .733 from the plate with seven RBI, including two doubles and one home run, to help the Wildcats to a 2-2 record in non-conference play last week. The sophomore was perfect (4-for-4) from the plate in the second game of a doubleheader against Cornell with four RBI. She finished the week hitting 11-of-15 with three runs. Defensively she recorded 17 putouts and four assists with no errors.
Receiving the first accolades of her young career, freshman shortstop Aurelia Gamch averaged .455 from the plate with three RBI, including one-home run and one double in this week's games. The home run against Cornell helped the Wildcats to a 9-6 non-conference win. Gamch also tallied eight assists and two putouts at the shortstop position.
Maryland Eastern Shore's Carly Martin earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
The Wildcats open conference play this week, heading out on the road to face Norfolk State for three games, April 2-3.
