WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Although the Rams kept B-CU's bats quiet early in the game, the Wildcats opened up the scoring with a four-run fifth inning en route to a third consecutive victory over Winston-Salem State. Tameika Jonas set off the scoring, while Cesley Tafoya led the team with two hits and an RBI. The win solidified the 3-0 win in the series versus the Rams.
The Wildcats got off to a slow offensive start, with just two hits in the first four innings. The B-CU defense kept the game tight enough for them to get rolling, as B-CU allowed eight hits which only translated into two WSSU runs. The Rams got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning, with two RBI, but that was where B-CU ended their scoring.
In the bottom of the fifth, with three runners on, a Tameika Jonas single batted in the first of four runs in the inning, as Michelle Banuelos-Smith crossed home plate. A long Aurelia Gamch single pushed two more runs in, as Joana Hernandez and Briana Leverett headed for home. Rounding out the runs for the inning, Cesley Tafoya batted in Gamch with an RBI single, taking a 4-2 lead.
For B-CU's final run, Sabrina Ferguson started off the sixth well, hitting a triple from the leadoff spot. She wasn't on the base path long, as Banuelos-Smith's sacrifice fly to left field sent her home after the tag-up. The Wildcats finished off the Rams with two runners stranded in the sixth, followed by a three-up, three-down conclusion in the seventh inning.
Allison Garcia (16-12) wrapped up another complete game, throwing 6 strikeouts, walking none, and allowing 2 earned runs.
The Wildcats (22-20) wrapped up the past week with a 4-1 record. In the coming week, B-CU takes a break from Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference games, facing off with three regional non-conference opponents over the next eight days. B-CU takes on the University of Central Florida in Orlando to start off the week, April 21, then heading back to Sunnyland Park for North Florida on the following afternoon. On April 26, the Wildcats host South Florida for a double-header at Sunnyland Park, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
