DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Another week, another victory for Bethune-Cookman.
The Wildcats pulled away from a 7-7 first quarter tie and posted a 42-7 victory over Savannah State University, Saturday at Municipal Stadium, getting four touchdowns and 277 yards out of Matt Johnson and a defensive effort that forced four Tiger turnovers.
B-CU is now 2-0 for the first time since 2005 as it opens Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play at home next Saturday against Norfolk State.
"It's all about the win," said B-CU Head Coach Brian Jenkins, dismayed with 18 Wildcat penalties and several scoring opportunities that were not capitalized upon. "We found a win to way to win despite of [mistakes]. We have some wrinkles to work out. I know that, and the kids know that."
Savannah State's running game caused the Wildcats early fits. After B-CU went up 7-0 on Johnson's 1-yard run, the Tigers (0-3) answered with an impressive 17-play, 75-yard scoring drive that produced Justin Babb's 1-yard run with 1:01 remaining in the opening period.
Babb finished with a game-high 125 yards on 16 carries.
"They (Savannah State) do some things that cause disruption," Jenkins said. "Until you find a package that'll help you settle down, that's going to happen. I'm proud that our guys were able to buckle down, come together and put in a good performance defensively."
B-CU pulled away in the second quarter with a pair of big plays generated by Johnson; a career-high 67-yard touchdown rush by the senior quarterback and a 43-yard strike to freshman Patrick Harris that made it 21-7.
Johnson exited after three quarters with 110 yards rushing and 169 passing, rushing for two scores and throwing a second touchdown to Pat Brown. He became the first B-CU quarterback since Allen Suber in 2003, to rush and throw for over 100 yards in consecutive games.
Troy Dannehower ran the final two series.
Andronicus Lovette registered the final Wildcat score on a 2-yard run with five minutes remaining.
Defensively, Arkee Smith finished with two interceptions, the first time a B-CU defensive has had a multi-pick game since Bobby Williams had three against Norfolk State in 2006. and Tevin Toney and Mike London each had sacks while Willie Collins and Daniel Rhodes each recovered fumbles.
JeVaughn Reams led B-CU's balanced receiving effort with five catches for 78 yards. Eight Wildcats caught at least one pass.
NOTES: B-CU finished with no turnovers, marking the first time since the final two games in 2000 that the Wildcats went consecutive games without turnovers ... Jenkins is the third coach in B-CU history to start his career 2-0, joining Andy Hinson (1976) and Wesley Moore (1973) ... The 112 is the second most points B-CU has scored in two games, the highest is 124 when B-CU defeated Benedict 26-0 and Savannah State 98-0 in 1953. Freshman kicker Sven Hurd extended his successful PAT streak to 16 though he missed a second quarter field goal ... Punter Kory Kowalski placed two punts inside the SSU five-yard line... B-CU has now scored in all eight quarters this season and on both opening drives.
