DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Wildcats were not themselves in tonight's game with Central Florida at Jackie Robinson ballpark. Typically B-CU is a tough offensive team, backing it up with solid defense, and great pitching to keep the opponent off the board. The Wildcats were unable to execute in any of the three areas, falling to UCF in a 13-0 shutout for the first loss of the 2011 season.
UCF capitalized early on B-CU errors and execution problems, first getting on the board in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. From there the knights kept the momentum and put steady scoring on the board.
One of the biggest keys to the deficit was that B-CU never got rolling on offense. The Wildcats collected just two hits in the nine-inning affair, and left eight runners on base in the loss. The Knights kept B-CU off balance, putting a rotation of seven pitchers in the game.
The Wildcat pitchers weren't hitting their spots and UCF responded with offense, putting 18 hits on the board. Uncharacteristically, the Wildcats recorded four errors in the game, doubling the total from the previous three games played over the weekend.
B-CU tallied up ten strikeouts in the loss, among four pitchers who faced the knights. Ron Lozada led the way with four strikeouts, only allowing one earned run. DJ Leonard and Alejandro Sanchez each tallied one hit.
Now it is crucial for the team to move forward in typical Wildcat fashion, with tomorrow's game against Stetson always looming as a key cross-county rivalry. B-CU won three of the last four against the Hatters. The team takes the field at 6:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
"We need to completely erase this game from our memory bank and move on for tomorrow," Melendez said of postgame themes with the players. "There's absolutely nothing you can do about a game like this."
