FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Wildcats were unable to produce enough offense to overcome the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast in game one of the series, Tuesday at Swanson Stadium. The game remained tight, scoreless in fact, through the first four innings, but once FGCU took the lead, they maintained it, as B-CU never got rolling offensively in the 5-2 loss.
Both defenses played outstanding through the first four innings, as the game remained scoreless, but the Eagles broke the deadlock, putting two on the board as a result of dropped routine fly in the Wildcat outfield.
The 'Cats got their only offense rolling in the top of the seventh, as a Paul Biocic walk and Ryan Durrence double to deep center field, slimming the game to a 3-2 deficit for B-CU.
The Eagles scored in two additional consecutive innings after the fifth. FGCU put up one in the sixth, and another pair in the seventh. The Wildcats broke the scoring streak with a three-straight stop in the eighth, but the damage was done, as the Eagles wrapped the game on top 5-2.
We were not up to Wildcat standards offensively and we didn't make any adjustments at the plate, with a bad approach,” said Head Coach Mervyl Melendez. “I'm very disappointed in our performance tonight, we looked rusty, and we're better than that.”
B-CU (19-16) returns to action with FGCU (16-16) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at Swanson Stadium. Follow the game on Gametracker or check for recaps here on www.B-CUathletics.com.
