NORFOLK, Va. - Bethune-Cookman finally got Norfolk State
Wednesday night as the Wildcats stunned the Spartans with a 70-68 overtime
victory in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals at The
Scope.
Adrien Coleman posted a double-double of 24 points and 13
rebounds as the eighth-seeded Wildcats (14-19) beat the top-seeded Spartans
(21-11) for the first time in four meetings, including a 73-70 setback in the
2012 tournament championship game.
Kevin Dukes and Paul Scotland each added 11 points for Bethune-Cookman,
who will face the Morgan State/Savannah State winner in the semifinals Friday
at 6 p.m.
Norfolk State went undefeated during the regular season and
was playing in its home city, but the Wildcats found a way to erase a 13-point second
half deficit to hand the Spartans the same tournament fate as the last team
(Coppin State in 1993-94) to have a perfect regular season - a quarterfinal
loss, thus snapping the Spartans 15-game winning streak.
"It was us against Norfolk," said Bethune-Cookman Head Coach
Gravelle Craig. "We may have had 30 people in the stands cheering for us,
including our [University President Dr. Edison O. Jackson]. We knew it was
going to be a challenge. We took on the role of underdog."
Able to get in transition, the Wildcats shot 59 percent (16-for-27)
from the field to erase a 40-27 deficit. Coleman sent the game into overtime on
a lay-up with 1:13 remaining.
A Coleman lay-up and
a Scotland free throw gave B-CU a quick 66-63 lead in the overtime period.
Norfolk state tied it at 66 on two Rob Johnson free throws with 3:53 left, but
an Alex Smith free throw and a Kevin Dukes lay-up gave the Wildcats the lead
for good.
The Spartans were 0-7 from the field in the overtime session.
"When we played Norfolk State 10 days ago, we could have won
that game," Craig said. "We were confident we could play with them."
Coleman posted his 10th career double-double and became B-CU's
27th 1,000 career point scorer with his final basket in regulation.
"Coach told us at halftime we needed to be aggressive," said
Coleman. "Getting out in transition made it easier for me to get to the basket.
"Before the game, I got a text from [former player] Stanley
Elliott and he told me to get this one for him," Coleman added. "He was a
senior last when we lost in the championship game that we felt we were one play
away from the NCAA tournament. He reminded me about B-CU history and getting big
games out of the way."
Scotland and Malik Jackson (eight points) scored all of
their combined 19 points in the second half as B-CU worked its way back from a
33-23 halftime deficit.
"I took on the role and did more," said Scotland, who was 7-of-9
from the foul line. "Malik hit some big shots."
Javoris Bryant , limited by foul trouble, had nine points
and six rebounds, while Alex Smith posted 12 rebounds and five blocked shots to
aid B-CU's 47-34 rebounding advantage.
Pendarvis Williams, the MEAC Player of The Year, led four
Spartans in double figures with 19 points.
