ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Playing its second straight overtime contest, Bethune-Cookman dropped a 69-67 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference decision to South Carolina State Monday night at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Matthew Hezekiah hit two free throws with 12.7 seconds remaining as the Bulldogs (6-12 overall, 2-3 MEAC) snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Wildcats, who are now 2-19 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
Maurice Taylor led four Wildcats in double figures with a career-high 20. Malik Jackson added 13, Tony Kynard 12 and Clemmye Owens 11. Travis Elliott posted a career-high 11 rebounds.
Hezekiah (17 points) also sent the game into overtime on a jumper with 1:27 to play.lay-up in the final minute
Jackson gave B-CU a 67-65 lead on a floating jumper with 2:09 left in overtime, but the Wildcats couldn't score again.
The Wildcats hit their first four three-point attempts and stormed out to an early 29-10 lead on a Taylor basket with 7:44 remaining in the first half. South Carolina State cut it to 38-25 at halftime.
B-CU hosts UMES Saturday at 4 p.m.
NOTES: This was the seventh time in program history the Wildcats have played in consecutive OT games; the Wildcats have two sweeps (1954 and 1972), a split (1978) and four occassions of being swept (1995,1998,2009 and 2014) when that happens ... B-CU now 2-3 in OT in the Gravelle Craig era ... Owens has now scored in double figures five straight games; the freshman also played all 45 minutes ... Jackson hit three three-pointers in the opening four minutes ... Taylor registered B-CU's first 20-point game since Mikel Trapp against Northern Colorado.
