DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Malik Jackson and Clemmye Owens each posted career- highs – 27 and 20 points, respectively, as Bethune-Cookman snapped the nation's longest active losing streak with a 69-63 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats (3-19 overall, 1-6 MEAC) hadn't won since a 98-55 decision against Trinity College on November 19 – a span of 17 games over 66 days. Bethune-Cookman's last two losses were overtime affairs at Savannah State and South Carolina State.
Maryland Eastern Shore (2-15,0-5) has now lost 31 straight on the road.
The Hawks led 32-25 at halftime, but Bethune-Cookman scored nine quick points – six on a pair of Mikel Trapp three-pointers -- in the opening two minutes to take a 34-32 lead. The Wildcats opened up a 60-50 lead on an Owens lay-up with 5:57 left.
Maryland Eastern Shore got it to 60-57 on a Troy Snyder jumper with 3:41 remaining, but Troy Simmons hit a three-pointer and Jackson sank five throws down the stretch to keep the Wildcats ahead.
Jackson was 5-7 from three-point range, and Owens 4-7 as the Wildcats sank a season-high 12 three-pointers,
Hakeem Baxter and Isaac Smith each scored 12 points for the Hawks.
B-CU hosts Howard Monday.
