BALTIMORE – Bethune-Cookman dropped a 3-2 (16-25,25-20,12-25,25-18,15-11) to host Coppin State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals Friday morning.
Delicia Pierre had a double-double of 15 kills and 13 digs for the Lady Cats, who concluded the season with a 12-20 mark. Coppin State (14-13) will face Hampton in the semifinals Saturday.
Destiny Hudson added a season-high 13 kills, including five in a third set that gave B-CU a 2-1 lead. Coppin State responded by taking four point leads in both the fourth and fifth sets and never trailing.
In the fifth set, Bethune-Cookman cut a 10-5 deficit down to 10-9 after consecutive Rakaya Neely blocks, but could come no closer.
Lauren Turner and Rhea Simon added eight and seven kills, respectively. Normarie Rolon posted 23 digs, while Hazel Ortiz-Rosado had 26 assists, eight digs and three services aces, bringing her MEAC-leading total to 54.
Neely, a freshman, finished with six blocks and set the school record for blocks in a season with 104, eclipsing the old mark of 103 set by Sharifa Carr in 2001.
