UCF Holds Off @BCUhoops 75-67

ORLANDO, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman's second half surge ran into UCF's Justin McBride as the Knights fended off the Wildcats 75-67 Sunday evening at CFE Arena in an ESPN3 televised game.

The Wildcats (2-5) got as close as 53-51 on Mikel Trapp's free throw with 11:21 remaining and  55-53 on a Ricky Johnson jumper with 10:21 left.

UCF (4-1) built its lead back up to nine, and when the Wildcats made it a two possession game on a Trapp three-pointer with 2:09 left and a lay-up at the 1:02 mark, McBride answered each time to cap off his 31-point night.

Quintin Brewer double-double of a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds paced the Wildcats, who shot a season-best 51.9 percent (27-52) from the field in addition to giving up a season-low nine turnovers.

Trapp added 15 points, including four from behind the arc, while Johnson, making his first appearance since injuring his ankle at Arizona State, posted 11 points and five assists.

UCF threatened to pull away midway during the second half, opening up a ten-point lead on three occasions, the last at 53-43 with 12:56 left.

Consecutive dunks from Ugo Okam  spirited a 10-2 Wildcat run that narrowed it to a two-point game.

In the first half, Bethune-Cookman managed ties of 5-5 on a Trapp three-pointer and 7-7 on a Delino Dear lay-up, but the Knights used an 12-4 run to build a 19-11 lead. UCF led by as many as 12 before settling for a 39-30 halftime advantage.

Clemmye Owens finished with nine points, seven coming in the first half, while Okam added eight and Dear six.

B-CU hosts North Florida Wednesday.

NOTES: The Wildcats also set a season-high with four blocks, two coming from Brewer…. Trapp has now been in double-figures four straight games and has hit a three-pointer in all seven … This was Brewer's second career double-double and third game in double-figure rebounding.
