TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Maurice Taylor and Clemmye Owens each scored 22 points as Bethune-Cookman downed Florida A&M 70-68 Thursday in the regular season finale for both teams.
Taylor posted both a career-high scoring night and his first career-double (10 rebounds) as the Wildcats (7-24 overall, 5-11 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) snapped a three-game losing streak as well as a five-game Rattler (13-17,8-8) run.
FAMU led 40-32 with 15:38 remaining, but the Wildcats rallied and took a 58-56 lead on an Owens lay-up with 6:03 to play.
B-CU led by five on two occasions down the stretch, the last on an Owens lay-up with 22 seconds to play that made it 69-64.
Florida A&M cut it to 69-67 on a Trey Kellum three-point play with ten seconds left.
A Malik Jackson free throw gave B-CU a 70-67 with nine seconds left.
Christopher Rozier made a free throw to bring FAMU to 70-68 with two seconds left, but he missed the second and Owens grabbed the rebound to seal the Wildcat victory.
Jackson had 14 points for B-CU, which played .500 ball (5-5) over the final 10 games of the season. Tony Kynard had nine assists, and Travis Elliott eight reboubds.
Reggie Lewis led FAMU with 23.
The Wildcats will face Coppin State in the MEAC tournament Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Norfolk, Va. B-CU moved from 12th place into a five-way tie for eighth with the victory, but Howard took the eighth seed based on winning percentage against the five tied teams and North Carolina A&T took ninth on winning percentage against higher seeds.
NOTES: Taylor registered 10 rebounds for the second straight game ... This was Owens' third 20 point game of the season ... B-CU won for the fourth time after trailing at halftime ... The Wildcats doubled their road conference victories over last season. This was Gravelle Craig's first victory at Florida A&M. The B-CU Big Bend - Tallahasse Alumni Chapter fed both teams after their games.
