WASHINGTON, D.C. – Bethune-Cookman volleyball dropped a heartbreaker in a 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-12) setback to the Howard Bison during a battle of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North/South, on Thursday, Oct. 15 in Burr Gym.
The Bison jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first set before B-CU called a timeout.
Despite closing the gap late to 23-20, the Wildcats were never able to pull ahead, falling behind 1-0 in the match after a 25-20 HU win.
The second set was all B-CU aside from three quick tied scores early in the game.
A Phylecia Armstrong solo block sealed the 20-18 'Cats victory and knotted the match at one heading into the break.
A mirror game to the first, B-CU fell 25-20, after trailing 23-20 late.
Set four was all B-CU as the 'Cats used a 9-1 run to open the set with Hazel Ortiz-Rosado serving seven of the nine points for the Wildcats.
B-CU was able to hold onto its run throughout the set, pulling away with a second 25-18 victory and knotting the score at two.
After leading 2-0 in the fifth, the 'Cats fell behind as the Bison were the first to eight in the final deciding set.
Howard was able to pull away with the 15-12 victory, taking the match 3-2.
Rhea Simon led the offense for B-CU with 13 kills while Rakaya Neely trailed with 12 committing her first hitting error in the past three matches.
Ortiz Rosado dished a team-best 35 assists, while Normarie Rolon earned a match-high 23 digs.
B-CU wraps up its Washington, D.C., swing with American University on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
