Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Mario Moody's dunks and double-double made for a memorable opening night for Bethune-Cookman Friday against Trinity College.
Moody finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds to help Bethune-Cookman defeat Trinity College 108-54 as the Wildcats enjoyed the largest opening night victory in program history.
The 54-point margin of victory eclipsed a 108-69 decision over Florida Memorial on November 28, 1977 while matching that game for highest scoring season opener.
Jordan Potts (14 points, 10 assists) and LaRon Smith (10 points, 11 rebounds) also double-doubled as the Wildcats posted their second largest margin of victory as a Division I team, falling two points shy of the record set in 1996 in a 128-72 victory over Morris Brown.
Moody, a redshirt senior transfer from Wagner was 9 of 12 from the field and electrified the Moore Gym crowd with five dunks.
“I'm going hard every night, it's my last year,” said Moody, who enjoyed a career-high scoring night. “Everybody was playing together and was active on defense. If we play defense, we'll be in every game.”
Quinton Forrest added 18, Ricky Johnson 14 and Marquel Ingram 12 as the Wildcats registered their highest point total since a 111-81 victory over Norfolk State in 2000.
Jordan and Potts hit consecutive threes as the Wildcats broke open a 2-2 tie and never looked back. They built the lead to 54-24 with a lot of high-percentage shots – B-CU shot 61.2 percent (41-67) from the floor.
“It was a good Friday night game and the crowd wants to be entertained,” said B-CU Head Coach Gravelle Craig. “Mario and Potts are definitely entertainers. We played with a lot of energy and it's good to get a win.”
