DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Jordan Robinson picked up his first home run of the year in a losing effort Sunday, as the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats fell to the Mercer Bears, 13-4 at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. With the win, Mercer completed the weekend sweep of B-CU.
With starting pitchers Kevin Griffey (B-CU) and DJ Johnson (Mercer) cruising through two innings, the bats came alive for the visiting Mercer Bears (4-4) in the third.
After left fielder Nate Moorhouse singled to kick off the inning, a sacrifice bunt was picked up by the B-CU defense, but could not get the force on Moorhouse at second, allowing two runners on safely. Trey Truitt singled in the next play, and Kyle Lewis then reached on a fielder's choice – enough to drive in Moorhouse for the 1-0 lead. Second baseman Devin Bonin then recorded a sacrifice fly to left that plated Conrad Cornell for the 2-0 Mercer advantage.
With the bases loaded and just one out, Griffey settled in to get the final two outs and keep the Bears from producing anything else.
B-CU (0-7) was unable to get anything going off Johnson in the third, allowing the Bears to have a huge top-half of the fourth. Mercer broke the game open with eight runs on five hits, prompting B-CU head coach Jason Beverlin to go to the bullpen four times in the frame.
Michael Austin eventually entered the close out the Mercer at-bat.
The Cats finally go to Johnson in the bottom-half of the inning, using Jordan Robinson's two-run shot to left – his first home run of the campaign, to pull back to within a 10-2 margin.
Mercer added three insurance runs in the sixth, highlighted by centerfielder Kyle Lewis' two-run homer to left field.
B-CU mustered up two more runs in the eighth, as Jose Carballo and Mijon Cummings plated a pair of runs. Cummings scored Nathan Bond courtesy a single to center, while Carballo drove in Brandon Wilkes with a ground-out to second.
Johnson earned the win, evening his record at 1-1 on the campaign. He worked five frames, spreading out six hits and allowing two runs – off the Robinson home run, and striking out six with no walks issued. Meanwhile, the loss went to Griffey who fell to 0-1 on the year, as he went three innings with three runs off two hits and walked two against four strikeouts.
Bond led the Cats offensively with a pair of hits, as well as catcher Zach Olszewski coming off the bench to register a pair of hits – one being a double to left center.
Though sitting at 0-7, Bethune-Cookman has faced similar adversity to produce a near winning season in 2004. That year, the Wildcats started out 0-7, only to come back and win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles, advancing to the NCAA Tallahassee [Fla.] Regional.
Bethune-Cookman gets back to the diamond Tuesday evening when playing host to Stetson at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
