DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Jacksonville scored 10 runs in the fifth and sixth inning, respectively, to erase an early 6-1 deficit, en route to a decisive 15-6 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

With Bethune-Cookman (3-14) holding a 6-1 lead after four innings complete, the Jacksonville Dolphins took advantage of the B-CU bullpen to plate 14 unanswered runs over the course of the final five innings.

B-CU reliever Byron Ferguson took over for starter Sidney Duprey to work the fifth.

After Parker Perez led off with a single and Cameron Gibson walked, shortstop JJ Gould cleared the bases with his first triple of the year, bringing Jacksonville (7-9) to within a 5-3 margin. Angelo Amendolare quickly plated Gould in the next at-bat, using a RBI groundout to short. At that point, Ivan Coutinho toed the rubber in place of Ferguson following another walk, collecting a strikeout in the process. However, third baseman Samuel Armstrong delivered a two-run scoring single to left that crossed Austin Hayes and Connor Marabell, each of whom earlier reached safely via base on balls.

That made the score 6-all after five complete.

JU took the lead for good in the top-half of the sixth, plating another five runs to grab an 11-6 advantage.

The Dolphins, winners of their first road game of the season Tuesday evening, plated another run in the seventh; added one in the eighth; and two additional insurance runs in the ninth for the final 15-6 scoring margin.

It was Bethune-Cookman touching the scoreboard first in the home-half of the second, when catcher Clay Middleton began a two-out rally with a single to right. Shortstop Demetrius Sims drove in Middleton two plays later with a hard double to right field, giving B-CU the 1-0 edge.

After JU knotted things at 1-all in the third, the Wildcats got a big five-run inning in the fourth to march out to a seemingly comfortable 6-1 lead.

JU pulled starting pitcher Spencer Stockton, working on a pitch count in the game, as Shane Wise took the hill in the fourth.

It was Rakeem Quinn quickly getting into scoring position with a single, followed by an error on a failed pickoff attempt by Wise, as he scampered to third with one out. Middleton plated Quinn with a RBI single to left, followed shortly with a RBI single from Sims – registering one of his team-high two RBI on the evening. Leadoff hitter Bryant Munoz crossed Austin Garcia who was hit by a pitch in his at-bat, lacing a single to left center for the 4-1 Wildcats advantage.

The B-CU at-bat continued with Jameel Edney's RBI bunt single to drive in Sims. And it was Munoz later scoring on an error that allowed Nathan Bond to reach safely as JU's Armstrong could not handle a ball hit to him at third base.

However, that would be all for the B-CU offense on the night as relievers Shannahan and Nathan Disch closed out the remaining 5 2/3 innings, scattering a pair of hits and striking out four batters.

Neither team's starting pitcher factored in the decision as B-CU's Duprey went four strong innings, allowing a run on one hit, walking four and striking out four. JU starter Stockton went three innings, giving up a run on three hits and striking out one against two walks.

Shannahan earned the win out of the bullpen for the Dolphins, upping his record for the year to 2-0. Meanwhile, it was Brandon Wilkes taking the loss for Bethune-Cookman in his first action on the mound this season, as he fell to 0-1. Wilkes worked 0.1 inning, giving up two runs on two hits and collecting a strikeout.

The B-CU offense was paced by Middleton with a 3-for-4 night at the dish, scoring twice and driving in another. Sims was 2-for-4 in a multi-hit night, plating two and scoring once. Edney also collected two hits and a RBI.

The Wildcats return to action Wednesday, March 11, when USF visits Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. With inclement weather expected to enter the Volusia County area Wednesday morning/afternoon, please stay tuned to @BCUDiamondCats on twitter for any and all possible schedule changes and/or delays.
