@BCUDiamondCats Offense Struggles in Loss to No. 20 FAU

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Bethune-Cookman baseball team was limited to just five hits Wednesday night, as the Wildcats fell to visiting No. 20 Florida Atlantic by a count of 15-0 in non-conference action at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

It took Bethune-Cookman (6-17) just over four innings to touch FAU starter Sean Labsan, and it would be just a single hit off the left-hander from Sarasota, Florida. He went the minimum five innings on the mound, allowing just the single hit and striking out five while walking three, in order to earn his first decision of the 2015 campaign.

FAU (19-3) opened up a comfortable 7-0 advantage for Labsan before he exited the mound prior to the start of the sixth inning.

The Owls scored two runs in the third, five in the fourth and another two in the fifth, respectively.

That would be enough to chase B-CU starting pitcher left-hander Donte Lindsay, as he was tagged for four runs (three earned) on five hits in just over three innings tossed. For Lindsay, Wednesday evening marked just the second career start for the sophomore from Cleveland.

Three additional Wildcats got significant time out of the bullpen, including Ivan Coutinho who came on in place of Lindsay in the fourth. He would toss 2 2/3 frames, allowing five runs on five hits.

FAU countered with four pitchers over the final four frames to complete the shutout. For the Wildcats, the shutout marks the second time in five games the offense was unable to score a run, after falling to USF by a 1-0 decision a week ago at home.

The FAU offense would tack on another two runs in the seventh as leadoff hitter Stephen Kerr drove in his only run of the game with a fielder's choice. That allowed the Owls to increase their lead at 11-0.

Four additional runs scored for the Owls in the ninth, highlighted by centerfielder Roman Collins' bases clearing triple with the bases loaded. Collins finished the night with seven RBI on a 2-for-5 showing at the plate.

With the loss, Lindsay drops to 0-2 on the season.

B-CU pitchers Michael Thomasson and Kevin Griffey closed out the final three innings.

The Wildcats offense was paced by Jameel Edney, extending his hitting streak to a season- and team-best eight games. The current MEAC Rookie of the Week posted a 2-for-4 night, while classmate Mijon Cummings joined Bryant Munoz and Demetrius Sims with a hit a piece.

Bethune-Cookman returns to action Friday night, traveling to Florida Gulf Coast for a three-game series in Fort Myers, Florida. First pitch of Friday's game is set for 6:30 p.m.
