Baseball Falls Late at Florida Gulf Coast, 9-8

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman allowed four runs in the seventh inning on Sunday, as Florida Gulf Coast earned a come-from-behind victory in the series finale over B-CU, 9-8 at Swanson Stadium. With the win, FGCU sweeps the weekend series from the Wildcats.

Bethune-Cookman (6-20) used its biggest offensive output of the weekend with a five-run fourth inning, giving the visiting Wildcats a 6-5 lead – the first of its kind for B-CU on the weekend. Additionally, the Cats were finally able to get into the Eagles bullpen for the first time all series.

FGCU reliever Jack English quickly loaded the bases as he was unable to record an out in just three batters faced. That brought Sterling Koerner out of the bullpen for the Eagles, as B-CU centerfielder Jordan Thomas collected a RBI fielder's choice to drive in Clay Middleton from third. On the ensuing play, catcher Zach Olszewski registered a sac fly to deep right, pushing across shortstop Demetrius Sims.

B-CU third baseman Brandon Wilkes then laced a RBI single to left field in order to score Thomas, just before Jordan Robinson cleared the bases with his first triple of the year, giving B-CU the lead at 6-5.

Robinson also homered back in the third with a solo shot to left, giving him a team-leading two home runs on the campaign.

The Wildcats added to their lead at 7-5 in the fifth, using Thomas' RBI double to left center in order to drive in Marcus Stump.

However, FGCU (11-12-1) would counter with four runs in the home-half of the seventh, giving the Eagles the lead for good.

Kyle Gilbert collected a sac fly to left, plating left fielder Zach Spivey for the first run of the inning. Meanwhile, Tyler Selesky drew a bases loaded walk from Wildcats reliever Sidney Duprey, knotting the game at 7-all. However, It was B-CU's Donte Lindsay that loaded the bases prior to Duprey's arrival on the mound.

The Eagles took the lead on the second of back-to-back bases loaded walks, as second baseman Jake Noll took a four-pitch base on balls to give FGCU an 8-7 advantage. The final run scored with Nick Rivera's single to left, seeing Matt Reardon come across from third.

The Wildcats did get a run back in the top of the eighth, but that was it as FGCU closer Garrett Anderson shut the door for his second save of the year.

The win went to Jordan Desguin out of the bullpen, keeping his record clean at 2-0 on the year. Eagles starting pitcher Josh Dye lasted just three innings, allowing the home run from Robinson and three hits total. However, he threw 52 pitches after three frames.

The loss went to Lindsay, who fell to 0-3 on the year. He went just a third of an inning, slapped with four earned runs on two hits and a walk.

Bethune-Cookman (6-20) starting pitcher Tyler Norris lasted just an inning and a third on the bump, as the freshman was tagged for five runs (four earned) on four hits.

Already holding a 2-0 lead after the first inning, Florida Gulf Coast plated three additional runs in the second to chase Norris.

Leadoff man Reardon reached base safely on a B-CU miscue, allowing Brady Anderson to score from third. When Selesky walked in the next at-bat to load the bases, Noll singled to left in order to score two in the form of Reardon and Zachary Orchard, advancing the Eagles lead out to 5-0.

B-CU's offense was paced by Robinson's 3-for-4 effort, adding three RBI and scoring once on the solo home run. Equally impressive at the dish was Thomas, finishing with a 3-for-4 day, adding a pair of runs and two RBI.

The non-conference woes continue for Bethune-Cookman, as the Wildcats have now dropped 30th consecutive out-of-conference contests dating back to March 26, 2014. On the year, the Cats are 0-17 against teams away from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

They will look to turn things around Tuesday evening, as Bethune-Cookman hosts FIU inside Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
