Baseball Winning Streak Snapped at No. 12 Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Mijon Cummings and Jordan Robinson each registered home runs on Wednesday night, but it was not enough as Bethune-Cookman fell to No. 12 Miami, 13-3, in non-conference baseball action inside Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Park. The loss for the Wildcats ends the team's season-long four-game winning streak.

Miami (21-9) wasted little time getting to sophomore starting pitcher Donté Lindsay, knocking the Cleveland native off the mound after just 2.2 innings tossed. The Hurricanes hit Lindsay for four runs (three earned) on three hits, while he walked three and struck out two.

Bethune-Cookman (11-22) trailed 3-0 after the opening inning.

The Wildcats finally got to UMiami starter Danny Garcia in the third, as freshman third baseman Mijon Cummings posted his first career home run with a deep shot over the left field wall and long into the cooling South Florida night.

That allowed the Maroon and Gold to cut into the lead, 3-1.

With Miami pushing the lead back out to three at 4-1 heading into the top-half of the fourth inning, redshirt senior centerfielder Jordan Robinson continued his hitting streak at a season-long 10 games, lifting his third home run of the year well past the left field wall.

That brought B-CU to within 4-2.

The Cats clawed closer in the fifth inning.

Redshirt freshman shortstop Demetrius Sims singled to lead off the frame, while true freshman Jameel Edney drove him home on the next play with a double down the left field line, allowing B-CU to trail by just a single run at 4-3. For Edney, the double was his team-high tying sixth of the year, while running his hitting streak to a team-best 12 games.

But in the bottom-half of the fifth, the 12th-ranked Hurricanes flexed an offensive muscle, batting around the order and tacking on six runs to run the score out to a 10-3 advantage.

Miami added insurance runs in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, respectively, putting the score at the final 13-3 decision.

Lindsay took the loss for the Cats, falling to 0-4 on the campaign. A total of seven pitchers were used on the mound for B-CU on the night, each giving up an earned run.

The win went to Garcia of UMiami, running his record to 5-1 for the year.

The Bethune-Cookman offense was led by Cummings' 2-for-3 showing at the dish, while Austin Garcia finished 2-for-3 as well. Garcia's multi-hit night was his fourth consecutive in that category.

Bethune-Cookman gets back to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action this weekend, traveling to Tallahassee, Florida for a three-game series with the Florida A&M Rattlers at Moore-Kittles Field. The series begins with a doubleheader on Friday, April 3, followed by a single game on Saturday.
