TAMPA – Zach Olszewski smacked his first career home run, but Bethune-Cookman dropped a 7-5 non-conference midweeker to the University of South Florida on Wednesday night at the USF Baseball Stadium.
The three-run shot to left center by the sophomore catcher brought home Demetrius Sims and Mijon Cummings gave the Wildcats the lead in second inning, but the Bulls (27-14-1) scored the next six runs en route to sweeping the home and home series.
Buddy Putnam's two-run single in USF's three-run fifth put the Bulls up 4-3. USF added two runs in the sixth when Austin Lueck scored on a wild pitch and Levi Borders doubled home Kevin Merrell.
Bethune-Cookman (15-31) closed to 6-4 in the seventh when Bryant Munoz' double down the left field line brought home Sims, who led off with a single.
Austin Garcia posted his fourth three-hit game of the season, doubling in the sixth and seventh to pace the Wildcats' nine-hit attack. Sims scored three runs, including one in the ninth, and Olszewski finished with two hits.
Juan Pizarro took the loss for the Wildcats, falling to 0-2. Seven different Wildcat hurlers got in work, most notably Sidney Duprey, who struck out the side in the seventh.
Defensively, Sims was part of three Wildcat double plays.
The Wildcats, who met sixth-ranked Florida on Tuesday night, travel to Louisville to face the fourth-ranked Cardinals for a three-game series that starts Friday at 6 p.m.
