DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Bethune-Cookman volleyball team dropped a close match, falling 3-1 (25-12, 17-25, 25-20, 25-21) to Florida Gulf Coast, during the Wildcat's home opener, Tuesday, Sept. 15 in Moore Gymnasium.
The visiting Eagles dominated the first set, as the 'Cats never led, with a 25-12 victory.
Momentum shifted during the second set, as B-CU answered FGCU's energy and cruised to a 25-17 victory, leading by as many as six.
The Wildcat's led early on during the third set but allowed a 4-0 Eagles run, putting FGCU on top 8-4. The four-point guest lead was enough to carry on throughout the set, sealing the 25-20 victory and 2-1 match advantage.
Heading into the fourth set, the Eagles struck first, while the two teams swapped point's back-and-fourth. The Wildcats led 18-17 before FGCU took the 22-19 lead, forcing a B-CU timeout. The Eagles used a 3-2 run to finish the set, capturing the 25-21 fourth-set and match victory.
Offensively, seniors Delicia Pierre and Rhea Simon each collected nine kills, while fellow senior Destiny Hudson added seven (.375).
The Wildcat's fourth senior, Hazel Ortiz Rosado ran the B-CU offense dishing a team-best 32 assists, while Pierre led the Wildcats with 10 digs and four blocks.
B-CU returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 17 - Friday, Sept. 18 as the Wildcats travel to the FIU Invitational in Miami, Florida. B-CU takes on FIU Thursday at 1 p.m., and Seattle Friday at 1 p.m.
