WILBERFORCE, Ohio – Bethune-Cookman University's Robert "Tony" O'Neal, Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities and Strategic Initiatives – along with members of his college football team, were inducted into the Central State University Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2016 on October 14 in Wilberforce, Ohio.
Â
The 1983 Central State Marauders, coached by Hall of Fame Coach William "Billie" Joe, finished the regular season undefeated at 10-0 and were the National Black College Champions. In post-season play, the Marauders stormed their way through the NCAA Division II playoffs, before finishing as runners-up to North Dakota State in the 1983 national championship game.
Â
Tony O'Neal was the starting tight end and a team leader on that 1983 squad, where he and the fellow members of that great team left a sterling legacy at CSU.
Â
"My experience at Central State, and the lessons learned from Billie Joe and the professors on campus, were the tools that I needed to catapult me into professional life. I will be forever grateful for the impact that CSU had on my life," said O'Neal.
Â
That 1983 team set the stage for the dynasty that Central State Football created over the next several years, which included championship runs in the NAIA in the early 1990's.
