@BCUVolleyball Heads to North Carolina for Weekend Tilt

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – Bethune-Cookman volleyball travels to North Carolina for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) weekend series at North Carolina A&T (Oct. 7) and North Carolina Central (Oct. 9).

The 3-15 Wildcats picked up two victories during Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opening weekend (Sept. 23-25), sweeping Savannah State and South Carolina State at home, with their third win over Tulane (Sept. 3) in New Orleans, Lousiana
.
Rookie Alana Handy currently leads the Wildcat offense with 2.57 per set, while posting three kill/dig double-doubles this season. Phylecia Armstrong set a program record with a .750 hitting percentage against Tulane, recording 15 kills with zero errors on 20 attempts giving her the second-best percentage in the nation. Armstrong ranks second on the team with 2.03 kills per set and leads the team with 60 total blocks.

On the defensive end, Normaire Rolon Soto has collected a team-best 199digs (3.37 dps), while Phalen Clark and J'nai Higgins have split the setting responsibility with 285 (5.82 aps) and 242 (4.40 aps) assists respectively.

NCAT
The 5-9 Aggies picked up two conference wins over Savannah State and South Carolina State during their MEAC opening weekend.

NCAT's offense is currently led by Samara Brown's 3.29 kills per set, trailed by Alyssa Pitt's 1.98.

Pacing the Aggie offense Liz Martino dishes 6.05 assists per set, while defensively Keniah Rivera collects 3.35 digs per set.

NCCU
The Lady Eagles opened up conference action with a pair of road wins at South Carolina State University (3-1) and Savannah State University (3-0). NCCU (3-8 Overall, 2-0 MEAC) is 2-0 in the league for the first time since joining the MEAC in 2011.

Junior setter Paige Phillips has moved up to fourth in the league with 7.09 assists per set as NCCU hit .187 in its first two MEAC matches. Phillips is coming off her second double-double of the season as she is adding an average of over two digs per set.

A quartet of Lady Eagles continue to tally over one kill per set. Senior Casey Curran (2.51 kills/set) paces NCCU's attack and is followed by classmate Kelsey Murphy (1.87 kps) and sophomore middle blockers Whitney White (1.77 kps, 0.66 bps) and Jazmine Daye (1.52 kps, 0.70 bps), who also lead the maroon and gray in blocks. 
 
Sophomore libero Bree Simmons highlights NCCU's back-row defense and service game with 3.83 digs and 0.31 aces per set. Simmons ranks sixth in MEAC in digs and White is 10th in hitting percentage (.211).

  • Normarie Rolon Soto moved into first place in BCU history on Tuesday, Oct. 4 when her 16 digs passed Jennifer Jimenez' Bethune-Cookman record of 1,186.
  • J'nai Higgins was named to the Bulldog Invitational All-Tournament Team (Sept. 17-18).
  • Alondra Bautista earned MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors (Sept. 5).
  • Phylecia Armstrong broke the BCU record for hitting percentage in a match after hitting .750 (15-0-20).
  • Armstrong earned All-Tournament honors at both the FAU Invitational (Aug. 26-27) and the Allstate Sugar Bowl Tournament (Sept. 2-3).
  • Alana Handy was named to the FAU All-Tournament team (Aug. 26-27).
  • Bethune-Cookman was selected as preseason favorites in the MEAC southern division.
