SAVANNAH, Ga. – Bethune-Cookman's 16-game winning streak over Savannah State ended Saturday night as the Tigers posted a 16-10 overtime victory in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener for both teams at Ted A. Wright Stadium.
Â
Cantrell Frazier's 9-yard run gave the Tigers (1-2 overall, 1-0 MEAC) their first victory over the Wildcats (0-3, 0-1 MEAC) since a 31-21 decision in the 1992 Gateway Classic. This is also Bethune-Cokman's first 0-3 start since 2009.
"It was a tough loss, but we have to bounce back quickly," said second-year B-CU head coach terry Sims afterwards. "We don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves, and nobody is going to feel sorry for a fout-time defending champion. It's a loss, and a touch one - but we have to get back up, and fast."
Â
Bethune-Cookman tied the game at 10 on
Akevious Williams' 2-yard run withÂ
7:19 remaining, after a bad snap by Savannah State gave the Wildcats first-and-goal at the two yard line.
Â
Both teams threatened to win the game in regulation. The Wildcats moved to the Tigers' 35, but
Uriel Hernandez's 52-yard field goal fell short. Savannah State had a drive going, but redshirt sophomore linebacker
Trenton Bridges leveled quarterback TJ Bell on a sack that all but ended the threat.
Â
The Wildcats had the ball first in overtime, but a Darrell Bonner interception put the Tigers in position to win the game. B-CU fumbles twice on its only possession of the overtime period.
Â
The Tigers took a 10-3 halftime lead on Bell's 26-yarder to Jeremiah Harris with 3:04 remaining in the second quarter.
Â
Hernandez gave the Wildcats an early 3-0 lead with 2:52 remaining in the first quarter on a 39-yard field after a fourth-down stop gave the offense a short field.
"I thought that our defense and offense looked good in spurts tonight," commented Sims. "But the penalties hurt us, again, and we have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot because one penalty gave them the ball with extra field position."
Â
Savannah State also capitalized on a short field to tie it at 3-3 on a 38-yard John Barron field after a short punt put the Tigers at the B-CU 25.
Â
Williams, who finished the game after starter
Anthony Cruz left with a first quarter injury, was 9-of-19 passing for 89 yards. Senior receiver
Jaime Wilson had five catches for 28 yards, and
Frank Brown chipped in with three receptions for 50 yards.
Â
Freshman running back
Tupac Isme led B-CU on the ground with 91 yards on 14 attempts.
Diquan Richardson had 10 tackles on defense, while
Jeremy Davis had a third quarter interception.
Bethune-Cookman hosts North Carolina Central next saturday at Municipal Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
