Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. – Bethune-Cookman women's basketball opened Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play with a 38-31 victory over Savannah State during a mid-week match up (Jan. 4) in Savannah, Georgia.
After not seeing a bucket for over six minutes in the opening quarter,
Kendra Cooper nailed one from deep to open the lid for the Wildcats before the first media timeout, where BCU trailed 5-3 at the 3:31 mark.
The Tigers wouldn't see a bucket of their own for the remained of the stanza, as
Taylor Houston hit a three of her own, giving BCU the 6-5 advantage at the end of the quarter.
Angel Golden used two foul shots at the 3:33 mark in the second quarter to put the Wildcats on top 13-12, before SSU went on a 4-0 run going up 16-13 over the next three minutes.
Monterika Warren's hoop-and-harm with ten seconds left in the half, knotted the score at 16 before heading into the locker room.
Golden led BCU at the break with a team-best four points while
Kailyn Williams pulled down five rebounds and three blocks.
The Wildcats used an 11-to-8 advantage in the third period to hold onto a 27-24 lead as
Kailyn Williams collected her tenth board of the game during the quarter.
Despite the Tigers brining the game within five late in the fourth, Bethune-Cookman was able to hold the lead, finishing game one of MEAC play with a 38-31 victory.
Ashanti Hunt led the Wildcat's offensive efforts with a team-best nine points, while Houston finished with seven points and five boards.
On the defensive end
Kailyn Williams pulled down a game-high 13 boards while blocking four shots and adding four points.
The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, Jan. 7 as Bethune-Cookman opens MEAC home action against Morgan State at 7 p.m., on the campus of Daytona State College.
