DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Welcome to the new age. It was enough to make your system blow.
Whatever doubts that Bethune-Cookman has moved on from the Kendra Cooper and Kailyn Williams era were probably erased in the time the Lady Wildcats scored nine points on Edward Waters before the visitors get off a shot. The rest of Friday's 101-60 season opener was more a showcase of promise than the two-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion extending their regular conference winning streak to ten.
Things were that under control that Preseason All-MEAC forward
Ashanti Hunt and senior point guard
Emily Williams could sit back and facilitate the kids having some fun. Hunt still had five boards, four assists and two blocks in 15 minutes while Williams dished out six assists to lead a team effort of 30 dimes that may or may not be a school record depending on the research but is definitely a high for a
Vanessa Blair-Lewis coached B-CU team.
"I congratulated them in the locker room about having 30 assists. How unselfishly they played was really great to watch," said Blair-Lewis, who saw one of her team break the century mark for the second time in her time. "We just wanted to come out tonight and solidify ourselves in this new era, this team. Not what was in the past, not who we graduated, but these young ladies who are now the new era for Lady wildcats and I thought that everybody came and contributed, and gave everyone a taste of who we are and what we are going to be like this year."
Â
The showcase started with junior
Angel Golden, who scored 11 points in the opening quarter en route to a career-high 28 on 10-14 shooting, including 6 of 10 from three-point range. Say hello to the new scorer. Â
Â
"Angel was always her own person, you know, she was on the floor a lot of times with someone [Kendra Cooper] who it was her time," Blair-Lewis said. "Angel has always done her part when she came in, I think the biggest thing a lot of people don't see about her is how she's grown as a defensive player. Now, Â not only do we know she can shoot the ball, but defensively, she one of our better defensive players"
Golden had a preseason scrimmage where she got to 20, but it wasn't pretty. This time, she hit a couple of early three and the rest of the night took care of itself.
"I was just focusing on getting hot early, Golden said.
Meanwhile, down in the post, it was
Chasimmie Brown's night. The junior scored 14 points and finished with six boards.
"Chasimmie ate up everything in the lane today, Blair-Lewis said. "I think she took advantage of her matchup, she was confident. This time, last year she was probably a little nervous in some of those games, when she miss some of those easy put backs that we knew she could have made, but just like everyone else's time has come, her time has come, and she solidified herself as our center for this team for this era."
Â
Said Brown: "I think that we all did a great job tonight but, as far as the post, we've been taking advantage of the mismatches we had out there. And we really got made in the paint tonight."
Complementing Brown was an 11-point effort from
Amaya Scott on 5-7 shooting.
The final new storyline came from the Battle family reunion with
Brianna Battle joining sister
Kanesha Battle on the Lady Wildcat roster. They combined for 28 points and eight assists and hit all seven free throws.
"It's a blessing to be reunited with my sister," said Kanesha, who scored 15. "Now that we're back on the court, I feel as if we still have that chemistry when she wasn't with me at the present time, now she's here it's like we are unstoppable when we are together."
The Lady Wildcats travel to FIU Monday.
