Rodriguez Grand Slam Keys 8-Run Wildcat Third

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Rain shortened its regular season finale to five innings, but Bethune-Cookman got everything what it needed done as the Wildcats used four home runs to dispatch Savannah State 10-5 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Danny Rodriguez registered the first Wildcat grand slam since 2013, Kyle Corbin homered twice and Josten Heron added another dinger from the nine hole as the Wildcats (30-23 overall, 15-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) swept the series from the Tigers (12-39,3-21) and secured the No. 1 Southern Division with the help of North Carolina A&T beating Florida A&M 10-7.

Savannah State jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings, but Rodriguez' shot in the bottom of the third tied the game with one swing and set the tone for an eight-run outburst.

Corbin followed with a two-run blast to right, then Heron smacked a two-run homer to left to give the Wildcats a 9-5 lead.

Corbin added a solo homer in the fourth to conclude the scoring.

Demetrius Sims went 3-3 on the day, including a leadoff triple.

Alexis Herrera (3-1) picked up the win with 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief, giving up three hits and striking out two.

Before Saturday, the last B-CU grand slam was by Anthony Stokes at Florida A&M on April 6, 2013.
