DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman ends a 20-day layoff Friday when it hosts Florida Gulf Coast at 6 p.m. in Historic Moore Gym as part of a two-match home stand. Florida Atlantic comes to Daytona Beach for a noon match on Sunday.
In addition to marking the return to action for the Wildcats since September 2, the home opener marks the Wildcats' first home match in Moore Gym since a 3-1 victory over South Carolina State on October 25, 2015. With Moore Gym undergoing renovations, B-CU played its 2016 home matches at nearby Warner Christian Academy and Mainland High School, compiling a 4-4 record.
These two matches and a rescheduled match at South Florida Tuesday are B-CU's final matches before beginning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play a week from Friday at Savannah State.
B-CU UPDATE: The last time the Wildcats took the court at the Bash In The Boro at Georgia Southern, they compiled a 2-1 record with wins over Charlotte and the host Eagles. It was B-CU's first winning weekend outside of conference play since 2006 and the second time in three years B-CU beaten two teams outside the MEAC in a weekend. How many times had that happen before? Once in 2002.
Rakaya Neely was named Tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by
Jordan Jefferson and
Phalen Clark.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE TROUBLE: Freshman
Jordan Jefferson has recorded a double-double in all six matches this season, with highs of 16 kills and 23 digs, both in the Charlotte victory. She was MEAC Rookie of The Week in each of the first two weeks on the season.
Â
RECORDING RAKAYA: The senior middle blocker is third on the all-time blocks list and enters the weekend 29 blocks away from
Phylecia Armstrong's career mark of 317. A long term goal is career kills, and Neely needs 66 to be on the top ten list in that category. Neely also leads the MEAC with a .378 hitting percentage.
Â
NOTES: B-CU leads the MEAC in kills (12.64), blocks (2.36) and assists (12.04) … The Wildcats were 6-2 in Moore Gym during
Brittany Williams' first season in 2015.
Â
ABOUT FGCU: The Eagles (7-5) are coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Hoosier Classic, where they swept Samford and UNLV before dropping a five-setter to host Indiana. Junior Outside hitter Carroll averaged 4.45 kills per set, while hitting .317 over the three matches last week, earning both the tournament MVP and Atlantic Sun Conference Player Of The Week honors.
Â
ABOUT FAU: The Owls (8-3) were 2-1 in their own tournament last weekend. They'll open Conference USA play Friday against Western Kentucky before coming up to Daytona Beach. Sigourney Kame leads FAU with 151 kills.
