@BCUGridiron NFL Playoff Primer: Davis Part Of Bills' History

Davis Makes 1st Playoff Appearance; Weems Set For Titans

Not only is this a story about a former Bethune-Cookman standout making his first NFL playoff appearance, this is also a story about the Buffalo Bills making their first NFL playoff appearance in 17 years.

Ryan Davis wouldn't have it any other way.

Now in his sixth season, the former Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player Of The Year has been a part of the Bills' heart-stopping season that saw them get help from the Cincinnati Bengals of all people to sneak into the AFC playoffs for the first time since 1999. They play the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday afternoon.

The Bills were the only NFL team not to participate in the post-season in the 21st century. Not any more.

For Davis, being a part of that makes this ride even more special.

"To be a part of history -- that's amazing," Davis said. "We broke the streak. Everybody in Buffalo is excited. All the players have had people come up and say thank you. It's a great feeling."

Buffalo fans were so grateful that they made donations to the charity of Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton after he manufactured the late touchdown drive that beat the Baltimore Ravens and put the Bills in as the sixth seed.

Davis didn't contribute to that, but does owe a bit a gratitude to Bengals defensive end Chris Smith, a former teammate with the Jaguars.

"I already touched base with him," Davis said. "Yeah, I owe him dinner."

Davis was a member of the Dallas Cowboys' playoff team last year, but injuries kept him out of the postseason.

He signed with the Bills this season, and has registered 26 tackles and three sacks in helping Buffalo upgrade its pass rush.

Among the highlights - a strip sack of Tampa Bay's Jameis Winston and playing in the latest NFL edition of a "snowmageddon" game when Buffalo beat Indianapolis in a driving snow.

"It's been a bounce back year for me," Davis said. "I've had knee surgery, and there was the birth of my daughter. There's a lot of great things ahead for me."

While Davis is making his NFL postseason debut, another former Wildcat keeps on going.

Eric Weems, who became the fourth Wildcat to play in a Super Bowl for the Atlanta Falcons back in January, is now with the Tennessee Titans, who play the Kansas City Chiefs in this weekend's other AFC playoff game.

This will be Weems' seventh post-season game, tying him with Nick Collins (Green Bay)  for second for most post-season appearances for a B-CU player with seven. Hall of Famer Larry Little leads with 12.

This is the first time since 2011 that Bethune-Cookman has had two players in the post-season. That was when the Wildcats had two players on the field at the same TIME when Weems eluded Collins and set a NFL post-season record with a 102-yard kickoff return. Green Bay beat Atlanta that game and went on to win the Super Bowl.
