Starting Five
1 For the first time in program history, BCU was predicted to finish first in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference by major publications and the conference's head coaches and sports information directors
2 BCU finished second nationally in rebounding average behind North Carolina. The 42.1 average and 1,346 total set single-season Wildcat records. This season, BCU's 227 total rebounds ranks 4th nationally and second in the conference behind only Savannah State
3 Cletrell Pope is third nationally with a whopping 52 rebounds. His 10.4 average leads the MEAC
4 Malik Maitland continued to shine in non-conference play when he dropped a career-best 29 points at Miami. Last year, his best was 22 against Boston U. Also, BCU has now narrowly lost to ACC programs in consecutive years by just a combined 11 points
5 Maitland also paces the MEAC with 12 steals, good for 8th nationally. BCU's 54 steals is 2nd in the NCAA, just seven behind FIU
Previously
Bethune-Cookman Head coach
Ryan Ridder was looking for his team to put together more solid play against a Power 5 opponent after slowly improving against DePaul and Marquette last week. He got that and more as the Miami Hurricanes came from behind (3-0) to fend off the Wildcats (2-3) for a 78-70 victory Saturday afternoon.
Malik Maitland scored a game-high 29 points for the Wildcats. He shot 11 of 16 from the field, including 5 of 7 from behind the arc.
"You really have to give a lot of credit to Bethune Cookman, their players and their coaches for coming in here and playing as well as they did," Miami coach Jim Larranaga said. "Maitland was absolutely terrific."
Last Time vs. UNO
(11/24/12 )Adrien Coleman posted career-highs in a 31-point, 13-rebound double-double as Bethune-Cookman downed Nebraska-Omaha 93-81 in the Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic at Valparaiso University. Coleman was 12-18 from the field and 7-7 from the line as BCU used a 12-4 run to take a 43-36 halftime lead and then kept the Mavericks at bay during a high-scoring second half.
