DeLAND, Fla. - Anthony Maldonado was up the task of going toe-to-toe with Stetson hurler Logan Gilbert, but the Bethune-Cookman offense was unable to score with runners on in a 2-0 setback Friday afternoon in front of 708 fans at Melching Field. BCU fell to 10-17 while Stetson advanced to 22-6.
Maldonado (2-2) went seven innings and allowed only one earned run and four hits. He struck out eight batters and walked three, including two in a rain-soaked bottom of the fourth.
Gilbert (6-0) pitched six innings and allowed four hits. He issued a season-high four walks and totaled nine strikeouts. Ben Onyshko pitched a hairy seventh inning and Brooks Wilson dodged a bases-loaded jam to pick up his 11th save.
The Wildcats left 12 runners stranded in the game, including the bags full in the fourth and eighth innings.
Nate Sterijevski led the way with a 2-5 day.
Stetson took an early lead in an interesting home half of the first. Maldonado struck out three batters, but a two-out solo bomb by Jorge Arenas put the Hatters ahead for good. SU added another run in the third off a Sterijevski scoring error that allowed Nico Torino, who doubled with one out, to score as he rounded third on an Austin Bogart fielder's choice.
Joseph Calamita pitched a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout and picked off a runner.
The three-game series concludes Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
