DeLAND, Fla. – Despite a strong start, Bethune-Cookman was unable to salvage a win in the series finale at No. 30 Stetson on Saturday evening as the Hatters claimed the sweep on a score of 7-4 at Melching Field.
Â
Bethune-Cookman (10-18) got a leadoff single from
Jordan Stacy to begin the second, followed by
Chase DeBonis being hit by a pitch to put two men on with one out. A single from
Jameel Edney scored the game's first run as Stacy came in on the play giving BCU the 1-0 advantage. That was followed by a RBI ground out to short from
Giovany Lorenzo, scoring DeBonis who hustled to third on the Edney single a play earlier.
Â
BCU would take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the inning.
Â
Stetson (23-5) tied the game in the bottom of the second using a one-out, two-run double to the wall in left center by Austin Bogart to score Brooks Wilson and Nico Torino. Jonathan Meola followed with a double to right field switching places with Bogart to give the Hatters a 3-2 lead.
Â
A two-run bomb from leadoff man Jacob Koos added to the lead to make it 5-2 for the Hatters – with all five runs coming in the second inning, as it spelled the end of the evening for starting pitcher
Tyler Krull with just 1.2 innings of work on the evening. Senior
Joseph Calamita would enter the game and retire the side with a fly out to left in his only batter faced in the contest.
Â
The Hatters added a run in the third and fourth inning, respectively, making it 7-2 in favor of the home team after four innings played.
Â
The Wildcats cut into the lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs.
Â
Ian Claudio walked and
Giovany Lorenzo doubled to put two in scoring position right at the start of the frame. That set the stage for
Nate Sterijevski to drive across Claudio with a single to second base. Added a
Zach Spivey single through the left side in order to cross Lorenzo, and the Maroon and Gold trailed 7-4 heading to the bottom of the fifth.
Â
Bethune-Cookman would threaten in the eighth as runners advanced to the corners with nobody out, but the visitors from Daytona Beach were unable to take advantage of the opportunity as Brooks Wilson closed the door on the Wildcats.
Â
The win was picked up by Stetson starter Mitchell Senger (4-1) as he worked six innings on the hill, allowing four runs on five hits, two walks and striking out seven batters. Brooks Wilson picked up his 12th save of the year as he pitched the final two innings of the game, allowing two hits, a walk and collecting a strikeout.
Â
The loss went to BCU junior right-hander
Tyler Krull (1-2) as he was hit early by the Hatters, being tagged for five runs on five hits and a walk.
Tyler Norris pitched well in relief as the senior threw six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on a pair of hits, one walk and registering six strikeouts.
Â
The BCU bats were paced by senior
Jordan Stacy as the left fielder was 2-for-4 at the dish and scored a run.
Nate Sterijevski,
Zach Spivey and
Giovany Lorenzo supplied the RBIs for the Wildcats.
Â
Bethune-Cookman is back in action Tuesday when the Wildcats travel to Miami for a contest at FIU.
