DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Alexis Herrera delivered his first complete game of the season and
Kyle Corbin pounded out four hits to lead a 12-3 Bethune-Cookman barrage against Norfolk State Friday morning at Sliwa Stadium on the campus of Embry-Riddle University.
The win keeps the Wildcats (22-33) alive in the MEAC Baseball Championship while the Spartans (19-30) see their season come to a close.
Herrera dealt nine strong innings without allowing a walk. The senior scattered nine hits and three runs while striking out four. The righty moved to 3-5 on the season.
A seven-run fifth inning propelled the Wildcats and chased out NSU starter Jonathan Mahoney (7-5). Corbin singled to ignite the action, and scored from second on an
Adonis Lao single to right field. After a
Nate Sterijevski single, Mahoney through wide of first and Lao trotted home for a 3-1 lead.
Jordan Stacy singled to right field and Sterijevski scored to chase out Mahoney. Jason Rudolph walked two batters and Joey Santos looked to put out the fire with the bases full.
Zach Spivey smacked a sacrifice fly to deep right field.
Chase DeBonis and Corbin singled later to each drive in a run and the 'Cats walked away with seven runs off seven hits in the inning.
Lao started the game with a leadoff walk, and scored later on an RBI double by Rodriguez in the first.
BCU ended the game on fire too, with four runs in the ninth. Corbin brought in two on a double sliced to center field. Sterijevski took the same page out of the playbook with a two-run double out to left field.
In total, BCU pounded out 15 hits led by Corbin's four and three RBI. Sterijevksi had three hits, while Stacy and DeBonis also had multi-hit games.
