LANDOVER, Md. -- Brent Heholt knows the Bethune-Cookman Track and Field Coaches "could have stuck a fork in him" after the Wildcat multi-event specialist ruptured his Achilles tendon two years ago.
"Oh, I was done," said Heholt. "But the coaches stood by me, worked with me patiently and got me to this point."
That point was the podium Friday at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Heholt shared the spotlight with
Quamecha Morrison on Day Two, as he and Morrison swept the multi-events. While Heholt concluded his comeback with a commanding heptathlon victory, Morrison also continued her mastery of the high jump, defending her conference championship while posting the ninth best leap in the nation at 5'11 ½.
Throw in the men 4000 meter distance relay team of
Carlin Berryhill,
Cameron Berryhill,
Daniel Kiptoo and
Mario Watson delivering the program's first-ever event a victory that helped the Wildcat men end the second day of completion in first place with 66 points, 15 ahead of North Carolina A&T, and no wonder Head Cooper
Donald Cooper described it as "a solid day."
"I told you Brent was going to be a good story," Cooper said. "Those events are staples of our program. Very proud of Quamecha and Brent … for him to running after that Achilles tendon says something."
Heholt, a senior, had the best results in the long jump, shot put and high jump as he outdistanced Norfolk State's Jaylan Banks 4590-4490.The shot put and high jump were both PRs.
"Those [results] gave me a lot of confidence," Heholt said. "After sitting out, I set a goal of making it back and competing for a championship. It's been a long journey, lot of ups and downs."
Tyson Wright took third with 4470, winning the 1000 meter finale that put him on the verge of overcoming Banks for second .
In the heptathlon, Morrison she used strong performance in the 60 hurdles and high jump to build a big lead that fended off Florida A&M's Ed'Quisha Alvin for a 3454-3442 victory.
Thea Shaw (3356) and
Monae Nichols (3276) took third and fourth.
The high jump saw the senior clear the bar on all five attempts for an easy victory.
"Just trying to get the job done," Morrison said about her double. "It was a lot of running around going from event to event, but we did this before. It feels good to see people you work with have the success we did today."
Cooper delighted in the Distance Medley victory that dented what's supposed to be North Carolina A&T dominance of the track. BCU posted a 10:13.14, North Carolina A&T a 10.14.70.
"Big congratulations," Cooper said. "They shocked everyone in the building and put on a show."
The Wildcat women are second, 5 ½ points behind Florida A&M's 62.5.
Thea Shaw finished eighth in the high jump,
Jayla Hill fifth in the weight throw and the 4000 meter distance relay sixth for the Lady Wildcats.
Kelton Williams,
David Long and
Isaiah Galloway were 3-6-7 in the high jump while
Jeremiah Peters was third in the weight throw for the men.
The meet concludes Saturday.
