GREEENSBORO, N.C. – Quamecha Morrison and
Jeremiah Peters are champions once again, and both Bethune-Cookman teams are in second place after the first day of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship at North Carolina A&T.
Norfolk State's men used a 1-2-3 finish in the 10000 meters to take a 37.5-34 lead over BCU after three events. On the women's side, Florida A&M has a 52.5-21 advantage.
Morrison defended her high jump title with a first-place leap of 5'10". Teammates
Moena Battle and
Dana Roberts tied for fifth place to give BCU 17 points in the event. The BCU women also picked up four points in the 10000 meters with a fifth-place finish by
Deja Davis.
Now with seven MEAC championships to her credit, Morrison is also leading the way in the women's heptathlon after five events with 3,222 points, while Roberts is second with 2,620 points.
In the men's competition, Peters, a three-time shot put champion, won the discus with a toss of 164'6" while
Kelton Williams was second in the high jump with a leap of 6'9 3/4" while
Isaiah Galloway was fifth with a jump of 6'8".
Carlin Berryhill,
Xavier Walton and
Daniel Kiptoo were 4-5-6 in the 10000.
Bethune-Cookman also has the lead midway through the men's decathlon, with junior
Marc McCoy having racked up 3,574 points through five events with
Brent Heholt in second with 3,409 points.
"It was a good start, a really spectacular day," said Head Coach
Donald Cooper. "Our kids did a great job. Of course, Morrison retained her title in the women's high jump and is also the current leader in the multis. Peters gave us a big lift by getting an upset win in the discus."
The competition continues Friday with a 9 a.m. start.
