ALCORN
Alcorn Head Men's Basketball Head Coach Landon Bussie, the 2021-22 SWAC Coach of the Year, leads his Alcorn Braves into Moore Gymnasium sitting atop the league for the first time this season. The defending regular season champion Braves have rolled off nine wins in their last 10 contests, including defeating Bethune-Cookman by a 76-68 decision in Lorman, Mississippi back on January 23. However, the Braves are just 5-9 in games played away from the Davey L. Whitney Complex this season, with two of those wins coming against Wichita State and Stephen F. Austin, respectfully.
Â
- Alcorn is 9-2 in SWAC play and in first place of the league standings entering the weekend
- The Braves are one of just three teams to have a non-losing record thus far on the campaign
- Four players have 20 or more steals – Byron Joshua (29), Trevin Wade (23), Dominic Brewton (22) and D.K. Thorn (22)
- Jeremiah Kendall is averaging 9.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest for the Braves

LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE BRAVES
Despite a 22-point scoring output from
Zion Harmon, Bethune-Cookman was thwarted in its efforts to upset Alcorn by a score of 76-68 in SWAC action inside the Davey L. Whitney Complex. Dontrell McQuarter finished as one of four players in double-figures scoring for Alcorn on the night, charging the Braves with 20 points.
Â
Bethune-Cookman carried a 29-26 lead into the locker room at the half. The visiting Wildcats connected on 41 percent shooting from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including a 57 percent effort from three-point range. In reverse of that, the Braves were limited to just 1-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc during the opening half.
Â
In the second half, Alcorn shot a blistering 60 percent from the floor, as the Braves connected on 18-of-30 shots. The Braves also added 12 points on 13 free throw attempts. The hosts raced out of the locker room to a 9-0 run courtesy baskets coming from McQuarter and Byron Joshua – and capped off with a three-pointer from the wing by Oddyst Walker stemming from a BCU turnover. Alcorn led 35-29 just over three minutes into the second half.
Â
However, Dominic Brewton would get going for Alcorn and deliver four points off the bench, added free throws from Trevin Wade, allowing the Braves to step back out in front at 48-42 just two minutes later. Despite several attempts to chip into the lead down the stretch, BCU would see its deficit grow to double-figures at 68-58 when McQuarter scored four points in quick succession and the clock reading 1:18 remaining.
Â
Altogether, Bethune-Cookman shot 11-for-17 from the foul line, as the Braves committed 20 fouls on the night. The Wildcats shot above the 40 percent mark from the floor in both halves, as well as hitting on 50 percent from long range for the game. The Wildcats used the 22-point effort from Harmon, as he also added a team-high tying four assists to his credit. For Harmon, it was his third game of the season in which he scored 20 or more points. He was followed in scoring by Garrett with 17 points, four assists and three rebounds. Davis rounded out the players in double-figures for the Wildcats, turning in 13 points and 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the campaign.

JACKSON STATE
Despite owning just a 7-17 overall record entering the weekend and playing at Florida A&M to begin their "Sunshine State" weekend slate, Jackson State holds a 6-5 record in SWAC play and sit tied for fourth in the league standings alongside Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Tigers are 2-15 on the road this year, including losses in each of their last 10 games away from the friendly confines of the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center, respectfully.
Â
- Opponents are scoring at a 76.9 points per game clip against the Tigers this season
- Romelle Mansel averages 7.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game for JSU
- Ken Evans Jr. is joined by Coltie Young with the duo leading the team in scoring with 10.7 ppg
- The Tigers are shooting 40.7 percent from the field overall as a team
Â
LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE TIGERS
Shooting woes haunted the Wildcats as they fell, 70-66 to Jackson State, in Jackson, Mississippi. The Wildcats managed only a 36 percent shooting clip from the field on the evening, connecting on only five of 25 three-pointers in the loss. BCU cut the Jackson State lead to as little as two on a three-pointer from
Dhashon Dyson, but with only five seconds left, the Wildcats could not close the deal.
Zion Harmon led the way with 20 points on 5-9 shooting.
Marcus Garrett followed with 15 points – he added seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
Kevin Davis grabbed nine rebounds.

Bethune-Cookman travels to the state of Alabama for the final two road contests of the SWAC regular season next weekend. BCU faces off against Alabama A&M (Feb. 18) and Alabama State (Feb. 20), respectively.
