A balanced scoring attack kept Bethune-Cookman to within five points of Big 10 opponent Nebraska as they fell just short, 63-58, Saturday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Bethune-Cookman quickly jumped out to a 10-4 advantage thanks to five quick points from
Brayon Freeman.
The Cornhuskers answered with a free throw and a pair of easy buckets in the paint to tie things at 12 midway through the first half.
The two teams traded buckets before Nebraska expanded its lead to seven on a Braxton Meah dunk to go ahead, 25-18.
Three-balls from
Trey Thomas and another from Freeman kept B-CU to within 29-24 heading into the half.
A 17-5 Nebraska run out of the half put the Cornhusters up, 46-30 with just under 14 minutes to play in the game before B-CU rattled off eight straight on a three-ball and five straight free throws.
B-CU trimmed the deficit all the way down to three at 51-48 after a pair of threes and a Thomas jumper.
Nebraska would remain up by as many as seven with under two to play.
Gianni Hunt kept the Cats alive with five points in the final minute, but the Huskers held on to win the game, 63-58.
Purdue Fort Wayne is 1-1 on the early goings. They took down Division III opponent Bluffton in the season opener, 99-47 before dropping last Friday's contest at UCF, 75-68.
The Mastodons finished the 2023-24 season 23-13 and 11-5 at home. They fell in the Horizon League Championship game to Oakland, which went on to defeat Kentucky in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. They also participated in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
Through two games, Purdue Fort Wayne is averaging 83.5 points per game and allowing 61. They have shot 51% from the field as a team and 32% from three.
Eric Mulder and Bello Rasheed have led the way offensively, each averaging 12.5 points per game.
The second matchup between PFW and B-CU in as many years is the second in the history of the two teams. Last season, the Mastodons took down the Wildcats, 86-63.
