Derrick Carter-Hollinger Jr. got a look in the paint with a chance to win it for the Wildcats, but the shot was off the mark at B-CU fell to Jackson State, 61-60, Monday night at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
Aslow start saw Bethune-Cookman fall behind Jackson State, 8-2, in the game's opening minutes. The Cats trailed by as much as nine on a Coltie Young three that made it 16-7 through nearly seven minutes of play.
Dhashon Dyson's hot start helped the Wildcats pull to within one at 19-18 just passed the midway point of the half, but the Tigers pushed the lead back up to eight at the half.
An and-one from
Zion Harmon, a pair of
Reggie Ward Jr. jumpers, and another three-ball from Dyson made it a new ballgame at 34-34 just three minutes into the second half.
Jackson State answered the surge with a 6-0 run before the Wildcats returned the favor and a
James Henderson Jr. layup tied things again at 41-41.
The Wildcats took their first lead of the night at 43-41 on a pair of free throws from Harmon. B-CU led by as many as four after a
Jakobi Heady three made it 54-50.
From there, JSU regained the lead again at 61-56 via free throws from Ken Evans. From that point at the 3:30 mark, the Wildcats held Jackson State scoreless through the remainder of the game, getting as close at 61-60 on a Heady layup.
B-CU had a chance to take the lead at the buzzer after four consecutive timeouts, but Carter-Hollinger's jumper was offline and the Wildcats fell 61-60
