Bethune-Cookman Mourns Passing of Hall of Fame Coach

Charles Wesley Moore inducted into 2012 Hall of Fame

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Charles Wesley Moore, a Bethune-Cookman Athletics Hall of Fame member, passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, at his home in Houston, Texas.

Charles Wesley Moore, known to all around him simply as "Wesley", was head football coach at Bethune-Cookman from 1973-75. Moore helped the Wildcats to a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) title I his very first season, as Bethune-Cookman College went 9-2 overall, and a perfect 6-0 in SIAC play.

The following year, Moore guided Bethune-Cookman to an 8-3-1 record, and an appearance in the Azalea Bowl played in Mobile, Alabama, as the Cats faced off against Langston – winning the game, 19-3. The Cats would stake a share of the SIAC championship in 1985, after going 10-1 overall with just one loss, which came against Florida A&M.

In his three seasons at the helm in Daytona Beach, Moore amassed a record of 27-6-1, earning him a career winning percentage of 80, and was the first coach to defeat in-state rival FAMU in consecutive seasons (1973 and '74). His 1975 team was ranked number one in the Jet Magazine National Football Poll.

Wesley Moore was the son of former longtime Bethune-Cookman president Dr. Richard Vernon Moore, Sr., for whom Moore Gymnasium – home of Bethune-Cookman Women's and Men's Basketball, as well as Volleyball, is named after. Former president Dr. Richard V. Moore is buried on the Bethune-Cookman campus, after he served 28 years overseeing the college from 1947-75.

Funeral services for Wesley Moore will be announced at a later date.
