BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Once again, and for the second time in three weeks, Bethune-Cookman Softball sweeps the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) weekly awards announced Tuesday, April 29, by the league office from its headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama.
Briana Velazquez was named SWAC Hitter of the Week;
Alyssa Lopez was Pitcher of the Week; and
Emma Bradley-Tse was tabbed Newcomer of the Week.
Briana Velazquez, a redshirt senior shortstop from San Pedro, California, went 6-for-9 over the weekend helping Bethune-Cookman to a 2-1 weekend and series win over Jackson State at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Florida. She started all three games at the shortstop position, bringing in five assists and a putout as well. The San Pedro High alum batted .667 with an RBI and a run scored. Celebrating as one of nine Wildcats playing their final home series at Sunnyland Park, she slugged at a .889 clip and was perfect on the base path with a stolen base in one attempt. In the second game of the series, Velazquez finished 2-for-3 with a double. She also had the leadoff double in the series finale before eventually scoring the series-winning run after turning in a 3-for-4 afternoon.
Emma Bradley-Smith, a junior outfielder from Richmond, British Columbia, batted .417 in a series where she started all three games at the left field position, defensively. The product of McMath Secondary School and Salt Lake CC was 5-for-12 with a run scored and an RBI, using a .417 slugging percentage. Her on-base percentage was .417, adding a stolen base in one attempt on the base path. In the series opener, she was 2-for-4 with a run scored in a run-rule decision. She was 2-for-4 in game two adding an RBI as well.
In the pitcher's circle, it was senior pitcher
Alyssa Lopez going 1-1 in the series victory against Jackson State at Sunnyland Park. In total, she worked 11.1 innings, striking out 15 batters and allowing eight runs (five earned) in scattering 12 hits across the series, respectively. She picked up a win in relief efforts against the Tigers in the series finale, throwing 2.1 innings and striking out three batters and a walk issued with no hits allowed in the walk-off win.
