UNF Strikes Out Wildcats in Baseball, 8-1

April 24, 2008

Box Score

Jacksonville, Fla. - Junior right-hander Ty Pryor was exceptionally strong on the mound Thursday night as he helped the University of North Florida to an 8-1 victory over visiting Bethune-Cookman University at Harmon Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.

UNF (24-18) used strong pitching against a Wildcats club that has been struggling as of late in mid-week games. The Ospreys collected 11 strikeouts against the `Cats--the most since USF a week ago where they equaled 11 Ks.

A pitcher's duel was broken up in the home half of the fourth inning when an error charged to B-CU (25-17) second baseman Mark Brooks allowed UNF designated hitter Travis Martin to score from third. The Ospreys led at that point, 1-0.

The home team added to their advantage in the fifth when Sam Perry connected on a 2-2 pitch to collect his first homerun of the year to deep left center. Another run was tagged on when Martin registered a RBI double to enter field that plated right fielder Preston Hale for the 3-0 UNF lead after five.

The Ospreys gained four more runs in the home-half of the sixth off B-CU relievers Darrin Young and Samuel Rodriguez--though all runs were credited to Young.

UNF leadoff hitter TJ Thompson banged his second triple of the year to clear the bases which were full of Ospreys to put UNF up 7-0.

B-CU got their lone run of the game with a solo homerun from first baseman Osvaldo Torres to left field that made the score 7-1.

UNF plated another run in the bottom of the seventh that recorded the final 8-1 score.

Pryor went seven strong innings on the hill for the Ospreys as he collected eight strikeouts and allowed just one run on two hits. He earned the win to improve his record to 5-3.

B-CU's Chapman took the loss to drop to 1-2, though he was impressive on the hill for the Wildcats as he went five innings. The junior allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits with three Ks.

B-CU was led at the plate by center fielder Jose Ortiz who was 2-for-3 with a walk.

The Wildcats host the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday to Jackie Robinson Ballpark in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available through Game Tracker at www.BCCathletics.com.
